Over 22.5 million Africans have been affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis in Zimbabwe. Many children lost a parent or both parents during this time. Although the severity of the AIDS epidemic has decreased, the lingering economic struggles in Zimbabwe have forced many parents into desperate situations, tragically abandoning their children.

Khayelihle Children’s Village was established in 1994 in response to the HIV/AIDs crisis to provide a safe home and access to education for orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children. The village now operates on a reconnection model, seeking out the extended family of the children that come to them and reuniting them where it is safe and supportive.

Children living at Khayelihle Children’s Village receive holistic care. Kids live in family groups with a variety of ages. House mothers, fathers and aunties look after the children. They are fed, clothed and loved by the staff and have access to a good education. The children have good rapport at their local schools.

Khayelihle Children’s Village seeks to reconnect children with their relatives in safe and supportive environments. It also helps find foster families for children for whom reconnection is impossible.Khayelihle Children’s Village is a vibrant community of children who are becoming capable and committed citizens, providing opportunities for children to excel in sports, music, and any other endeavour they pursue. Many of the original children are now adults attending university, starting their businesses, creating their own families, and living independently.
