Donwai was 5 months old when he lost his mum and dad. He is part of a marginalised ethnic group, and grew up with his grandparents in an isolated village in Bangladesh. He had very limited access to education.
This is where our partner, Vana Bawm, met him. Vana’s heart broke for Donwai. With limited access to school, Donwai’s only opportunity was to work in the field supporting his grandparents for the rest of his life. Vana was overwhelmed at the thought of leaving Donwai in that field.
Through the support of people like you, Donwai was able to go and live at Bandarban Hills Hostel which is operated by the Churches of Christ in the Bandarban Hills. The hostel offers vulnerable children the opportunity to attend local schools and provides safe accommodation, meals and support for the children. They also organise their enrolments in local schools. Without the hostel many of these children, like Donwai, wouldn’t be able to go to school.
Long-term education gives children the opportunity to choose their futures. Donwai said, “My parents are no longer with me, but there are new parents around me at the hostel. They are inspiring me on the right path for my future. Through the program I became strong and very much blessed. It has changed my entire life.”
Now, Donwai has hope for a brighter future. He is well supported and receiving an education. He has been studying for three years, and loves learning mathematics at school. He enjoys playing indoor games like chess and ludo, and chatting with friends and the hostel.
He also has a clear goal for his brighter future. He wants to be a leader of his community. He wants to help change other people's lives, as his life changed with the help of people like you.
Donwai said, “I am so grateful and thankful to everyone who is supporting me to study in the hostel. Thank you, thank you, thank you and God bless you all.”
This is the amazing impact you can have, helping give children brighter futures.
