Christian Mercy International has been actively working to improve student well-being and school facilities in South Sudan. They are collaborating with ten schools to enhance educational services and upgrade their facilities, enabling them to receive support from the World Food Program.
Most recently, the Marolbuol Community Primary School and Taraliet Christian Academy communities constructed two latrines, a kitchen and a storeroom.
Paulino, Christian Mercy Director, reported that before the latrines, the children defecated in the bush, which is less than sanitary. Sometimes, schools found that kids went into the bush and forgot to return to school! It was also difficult to support children with disability.
Because of your support, Global Mission Partners provided materials for roofing the facilities, plastering, and concrete. The local community members contributed by making bricks for the new facilities and building the kitchens and storerooms.
Paulino says that when installing latrines, they ensure they are accessible to students with disabilities, including those using wheelchairs. “We ensure that there is access and provide gloves for hygiene.” The organisation also supplied 100 menstrual hygiene kits to girls to assist with sanitation and hygiene.
The World Food Programme can now assist the schools in providing lunches to the students since the latrines, kitchens and storerooms have been built and installed. This development has improved school attendance. When there’s lunch provided at school- people attend!
Four out of ten schools now have latrines, kitchens and storerooms installed in their school and are receiving the World Food Programme benefits.
Through the Great Gifts catalogue, your generosity helped make this life-changing impact possible by creating safe and dignified learning environments and unlocking access to daily meals through the World Food Programme. As a result, more children are staying in school, learning consistently and growing with better health, confidence and hope for the future.
