Ukraine Emergency Appeal

The Russian Federation invaded the Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Global Mission Partners (GMP) joins with the bulk of the global community in deploring this action, which blatantly violates Ukrainian sovereignty and is causing a large-scale humanitarian crisis.

Russian military strikes have left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity or water. Hundreds of homes and other civilian targets have been damaged or destroyed, while bridges and roads damaged by Russian shelling have left some communities cut off from markets. Kyiv and other major cities have suffered air and ground bombardment, resulting in the destruction of homes, public infrastructure and a shortage of essential services. There has been a mass exodus of people fleeing the warzones.

In response, GMP is launching an emergency appeal to fund a humanitarian response through Action by Churches Together (ACT) Alliance. Funds will be distributed through Hungarian Interchurch Aid (HIA) who are well placed to offer humanitarian support.

Primary needs are emerging in terms of security, relocation and establishment of structures for the acceptance of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). This includes the supply of shelter, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) entities, food, essential items, health, protection and psycho-social services.

We also expect the internal displacement of people to continue so long as there is fighting. For the non-displaced population as well, internal supply chains will be affected, and there are already shortages of non-perishable food, petrol  and other essential goods. This will, of course, only get worse the longer the invasion continues.

The first response through HIA covers:

  • The purchase of food and other necessary items to be distributed among IDPs arriving in western Ukraine.
  • Provide shelter for 1500 children, as well as food and medicine.
  • Preparing an immediate relief operation for IDPs, including food distribution.
  • Registering and responding to the needs as more requests come in.

Please give now to help this vital humanitarian response. As the situation develops we will continue to update you on the distribution of funds and emerging needs.

Thank you for your compassion for those in need. You can also view and download a prayer for Ukraine here.
