Health and Education in a Squatter Community

Improving health and education
Hosanna Ministries is helping to improve the standard of living in the Prakash Tekadi community. It aims to empower the community and improve community members’ education and health.
What is Prakash Tekadi?
Prakash Tekadi is a community of about 180 people squatting near the main garbage tip, in the Ambernath district of Mumbai, India. They live in extremely poor and unhygienic conditions. Very few people have education beyond primary school, and the children in the community have no regular access to education.
What is the impact of this project?
Hosanna Ministries provides a literacy program for children, youth and women, providing opportunities for youth to access vocational training. The project staff liaise with the local school to encourage children to regularly attend school. The project arranges doctor visits, medical check-up camps and health information workshops with appropriate medical professionals.
Through improving health and education in Prakash Tekadi, the project aims to increase individual and families’ personal hygiene which leads to better health. Parents are now seeing the importance of education and are ensuring their children are attending school. This is helping to break the cycle of poverty.
