Amath's mother brews and sells alcohol to pay for her daughter's school fees. But she can’t sell enough to pay the fees, so Amath has to miss school. Adeng also can’t attend school, because her father is unemployed. Without a secure income both girls will miss out on crucial education.
Many caregivers in South Sudan encounter daily challenges in providing education for their children. The nation has the world's third-lowest literacy rate. Conflict, economic collapse, and food insecurity make it difficult for people living in poverty to improve their income.
Our partner, Christian Mercy International (CMI), is helping children like Amath and Adeng get an education.
Since 2018, CMI has given goats to some of the most vulnerable families in the Aweil region. The children may have lost one or both parents, have a disability, or have a caregiver who is vulnerable. Raising and selling goats enables caregivers to earn a sustainable income to support their children's education. The goats multiply, starting an income stream that can last for many years to come!
Thanks to The Goat Project, Amath and Adeng received the gift of goats.
Amath’s mother shared, “Upon receiving the goats, I stopped brewing alcohol. My children never missed a single term again because I started rearing goats to provide for their needs.”
Adeng’s mother, Atong, said, “Not one of us believes our child can go to school based on the situation we were in. But upon receiving the goats, my situation changed." Atong's husband can now earn a small income with the goats. "I found myself the luckiest person among my neighbours," she said.
Now, Adeng has completed the final exams for grade eight. “If it were not for the goats I received, my daughter would not have made it to class eight,” Atong reflected.
The Goat Project currently assists over 90 new families annually across 10 schools. With your support, more caregivers can receive the gift of a goat. A Goat can help caregivers earn a secure income so their children can receive an education. With your gift of education, we can create a hopeful future for young people in South Sudan.
