Phil’s Walk for Hope Along the Aussie Camino Trek

Thursday, 2 May 2024

Phil from Aldgate Church of Christ, South Australia, completed the 11-day Aussie Camino Trek. It was a personal pilgrimage and effort to raise funds for the Walk for Hope Easter Appeal.

On March 11, he set off on his adventure—a 270km trail from Portland, Victoria, to Penola, South Australia. The Camino follows the Great South West Walk, then along farm tracks, goat trails, minor roads, and even abandoned railway lines.

“I began my trek solo and completely unsupported carrying six days of food, tent… walking along cliff tops, long stretches of beach, tackled sand dunes and mallee scrub,” he reported.

When Phil reached Nelson and the SA/Vic border, his wife, Michelle, met him. Phil continued walking solo for five days. Michelle supported him at different points until he reached the end.

Phil experienced the challenges of the trek. “The trail I have walked hasn’t been easy in parts," he shared. Walking alone was the hardest part for Phil. “but it is also the walk that makes you the strongest,” he reflected. He was able to remain encouraged, “I knew that God was with me every step of the way.”

Walk for Hope is about walking together and alongside our ministry partners. Phil also experienced this during his trek. “As I walked, I knew people were supporting me in prayer and words of encouragement. [And supporting] through their donations,” he said.

Walking the Camino was a personal pilgrimage for Phil. He had an encounter with God. “As I walked the Aussie Camino and opened my heart to the possibilities, the wonders of nature and the child within me, I was filled with peace and joy.” There was hope.

Thank you, Phil, for taking on this challenge! Thank you to those who walked alongside him in prayer and encouragement. Thank you, Aldgate Church of Christ, and those who donated to the Walk for Hope Easter Appeal.

Your support will encourage emerging Indigenous leaders. To walk alongside them, providing ministry training and appropriate mentoring. Sowing seeds of faith and giving hope for their future.
